So, summer slowly simmers on. The beans are growing, a few tomatoes peeking out from under the vines, the inflatable pool filled with kids, and a few summer storms wandering through. Temperatures: not bad, not good. Appeals for central air: many.
Last Saturday I took the boys to the essential Midwestern summer event: the tractor pull at the local county fair. Not just any tractor pull, the America's Pull, an NTPA Grand National event in Henry, IL! Met Doug and Treven and Doug's folks, crowded into the packed wooden grandstand, saluted the flag like a good red-blooded American, and cheered on the Red and Ram, booed the Green and watched in wonder as all manner of noisy contraption yanked and grunted and dug and pulled for victory. Well, maybe it wasn't quite that dramatic, but it was that loud. And fun anyway.
As we were walking to the grandstands we heard one of the HEMI-powered two-wheel drive rigs go blasting down the track and Kenrick's eyes got big as grapefruits. "Is that one of the trucks?" "Yep." Big smile.
Earplugs were a must. Here's what is sounded like: (plug your ears)
